How to Diagnose and Rebuild a Differential

The Rebuild: Bearings, Gears, and Setup

A master rebuild kit — bearings, seals, gaskets, and shims — covers the typical job. The work splits into three parts.

Bearings. The pinion and carrier bearings need a press and a bearing splitter. No press? This is the one step worth outsourcing — most machine shops do it for a modest fee.

Gears. If the ring and pinion are chipped, pitted, or heavily worn, replace them as a matched set — never one gear alone. Setup is where the patience goes: pinion depth, backlash (typically 0.006–0.010 inch — check your factory spec), and a contact pattern check with marking compound. The pattern shows whether the gears mesh mid-tooth.

Limited-slip. Chatter in corners means a worn clutch pack. New friction discs are inexpensive — just add friction modifier to the fluid, or the chatter returns.
